THE PROBLEM

When the Container Foundation Is Weak

Most tracking problems start at setup. A container installed in the wrong place, or filled with tags nobody can identify, makes every later change risky.

Snippet Missing or Duplicated

The container loads twice on some templates and not at all on others, such as checkout or thank-you pages hosted on a different platform.

Hardcoded Tags Next to GTM

Old gtag.js or pixel code in the theme fires alongside GTM tags, so pageviews and conversions are recorded twice.

No Structure Anyone Can Follow

Tags named 'New Tag 3' and triggers without purpose make it hard to know what fires where, so nobody wants to touch the container.

WHAT WE IMPLEMENT

What We Configure in Your New Container

Your setup covers installation, the core measurement tags and the housekeeping that keeps the container maintainable after we hand it over.

01

Container Installation

Head and body snippets placed on every template, including subdomains and hosted checkout or booking pages.

02

GA4 Google Tag

Google tag configured with your measurement ID, cross-domain settings and parameters shared across events.

03

Ad Platform Base Tags

Google Ads Conversion Linker, remarketing tag and Meta Pixel base code set up with correct firing rules.

04

Consent Mode v2

Default and update consent states wired to your CMP, with tag-level consent requirements applied.

05

Built-In and Constant Variables

Page, click and form variables enabled, plus constants for IDs so values are managed in one place.

06

Naming and Folder Structure

A consistent naming scheme and folders by platform, so every tag, trigger and variable is easy to locate.

HOW IT WORKS

How a Clean GTM Setup Comes Together

The container loads on every page, reads consent, then fires platform tags that pass data to the tools your team reports from.

01
Page Load

GTM snippet loads early in the page head

02
Consent Check

Default consent state set before tags run

03
Container Rules

Triggers decide which tags are allowed to fire

04
Platform Tags

GA4, Google Ads and Meta tags send hits

05
Reporting

Data arrives in GA4 and ad platform accounts

FAQ

GTM Setup FAQ

Straight answers before you book. Still have a question? Talk to us directly.

Where exactly does the GTM snippet need to go?

The main script goes as high as possible in the page head, and the noscript iframe goes right after the opening body tag. On platforms like WordPress, Shopify or Webflow we use the method that fits the platform, whether that is a theme file, an app or custom code settings.

We map what the existing code tracks, rebuild that tracking in GTM and then give you a removal list. Running both at the same time causes duplicate pageviews and conversions, so the switch is planned so there is no gap in data.

Often, yes. A single container can serve a main site and subdomains, and GA4 cross-domain settings can connect sessions across separate domains. When sites have very different owners or tag needs, separate containers can be cleaner. We recommend the setup that fits your structure.

Publish access to your GTM container, editor access to GA4 and admin or standard access to your ad accounts. If the snippet has to be added through your CMS or code repository, we either need access there or we give your developer exact instructions.

Setup covers the container foundation, GA4 and ad platform base tags, and consent. Detailed event and conversion tracking for forms, clicks and purchases is handled in GTM Event Tracking, and the two are often done together.
