Google Ads Server-Side Conversion Tracking
We move your Google Ads conversion tracking into a server-side GTM container. Click identifiers are stored in first-party cookies, conversion tags fire from your server, and enhanced conversion data is hashed before it is sent. For advertisers who bid on conversion data.

Where Browser-Based Google Ads Tags Lose Conversions
Google Ads bidding learns from the conversions it receives. When the browser tag fails or loses the click ID, the conversion never gets credited to the ad.
Lost Click Identifiers
When the gclid cookie is capped or cleared before checkout, a later conversion cannot be tied back to the click that drove it.
Blocked Conversion Tags
The gtag conversion request can be stopped by blockers on the thank-you page, so a real sale is never reported to Google Ads.
Raw User Data in the Browser
Enhanced conversions collected client-side expose customer fields in page scripts before hashing happens.
What We Configure for Google Ads in sGTM
Your Google Ads conversion actions stay the same. We move the tags that feed them into the server container and tighten how click IDs and user data are handled.
Server Conversion Linker
The Conversion Linker tag in sGTM stores gclid, gbraid and wbraid in first-party cookies on your domain.
Google Ads Conversion Tag
Server-side conversion tags for each action, mapped to conversion ID, label, value and currency.
Transaction ID Deduplication
Order or lead IDs passed with every conversion so Google Ads can drop duplicate submissions.
Enhanced Conversions Data
Email, phone and address fields normalized and hashed with SHA-256 on the server before they are forwarded.
Remarketing Tag
Google Ads remarketing moved server-side where suitable, with consent checks applied to audience building.
Consent Mode Signals
ad_storage and ad_user_data states passed to the server tags so conversion behavior follows user choices.
How a Server-Side Google Ads Conversion Is Sent
The click ID is captured on landing, kept in a first-party cookie and read again by the server when the conversion happens.
Visitor lands with gclid in the URL
Click ID saved as a first-party cookie
Purchase or lead sent to sGTM
Adds value, order ID and hashed data
Conversion credited to the right click

Google Ads Server-Side Tracking FAQ
Straight answers before you book. Still have a question? Talk to us directly.
Do I have to recreate my Google Ads conversion actions?
No. Server tags use the same conversion ID and label as your existing actions. The change is in how data reaches them, so bidding history and reporting stay attached to the same actions.
What happens to the gclid when tracking moves server-side?
The server Conversion Linker reads the click ID from the landing URL and stores it in a first-party cookie set by your server. When the conversion fires later, the server tag reads that cookie and sends it with the conversion.
Is this the same as offline conversion imports?
No. Server-side tracking handles conversions that happen on your website. Offline imports send conversions that happen later in a CRM or by phone. Many accounts use both, and we can plan them together.
How is enhanced conversions data protected?
Customer fields such as email and phone are normalized and hashed with SHA-256 inside the server container. Only the hashed values are sent to Google Ads, and only when consent allows it.
Can I run browser and server Google Ads tags at the same time?
Briefly, during testing, but not for the same conversion action in production without deduplication. We use transaction IDs and a planned cutover so conversions are not counted twice.
