When Google Ads Counts the Wrong Conversions
Most accounts we review have tags that work, just not correctly. Small configuration mistakes quietly change what Smart Bidding optimizes toward.
Duplicate Conversions
Thank you page reloads, GA4 imports stacked on native tags, or tags firing twice all inflate the numbers bidding relies on.
Micro Events Marked Primary
Page views, scrolls or clicks set as primary conversions pull budget toward cheap actions that never become revenue.
Static or Missing Values
A fixed value on every purchase or lead hides which campaigns bring in larger orders and blocks value based bidding.
The Conversion Tracking Components We Implement
We build the core Google Ads measurement layer in Google Tag Manager, with conversion actions configured in the account to match how your business defines success.
Conversion Action Configuration
Categories, counting method, click-through and view-through windows, and attribution model set per action.
Google Tag and Conversion Linker
Google tag deployed through GTM with conversion linker so GCLID and GBRAID values are stored in first-party cookies.
Dynamic Conversion Values
Revenue, currency and order value passed from the dataLayer instead of hard-coded numbers.
Transaction ID Deduplication
A unique order or lead ID sent with each conversion so Google Ads drops repeat hits.
Primary and Secondary Goals
Bidding goals limited to meaningful actions while supporting events stay available for reporting.
Consent Mode v2 Signals
Tags wired to your consent platform so ad_storage and ad_user_data states reach Google Ads.
How a Conversion Reaches Google Ads
Each conversion follows a clear path from the ad click to the bidding algorithm, with a unique ID and value attached along the way.
GCLID added to the landing page URL
Click ID stored in a first-party cookie
Purchase or lead pushed to the dataLayer
Fires with value, currency and order ID
Conversion attributed and used for bidding

Google Ads Conversion Tracking FAQ
Straight answers before you book. Still have a question? Talk to us directly.
How many conversion actions should a Google Ads account have?
There is no fixed number. What matters is that only a few meaningful actions are primary and used for bidding. Supporting events can stay as secondary actions for reporting without steering Smart Bidding.
Should the counting method be One or Every?
For leads, One is usually correct because repeated form fills from the same click rarely add value. For purchases, Every is the norm since each order is a separate sale. We set this per action based on your business model.
Why do Google Ads and GA4 show different conversion numbers?
They use different attribution models, conversion windows and timing, and GA4 reports by session while Google Ads reports by click date. Some difference is expected. We make sure the gap comes from those rules and not from broken tags.
Can you fix an existing setup instead of rebuilding it?
Yes. If the container is in reasonable shape we repair and clean up what is there. If it is too tangled to maintain, we explain why and rebuild the Google Ads layer in a way your team can follow.
Do I need Google Tag Manager for this?
We strongly recommend it. GTM makes the tags easier to test, version and change later. If you cannot use GTM, we can work with a hardcoded Google tag, but testing and maintenance take more effort.
