Add to Cart and Checkout Funnel Tracking
Knowing that a shopper did not buy is less useful than knowing where they stopped. We track product views, add to cart, cart changes and each checkout step with full item data, so GA4 funnels and ad platform audiences reflect real shopping behavior.
Stores that want to find and fix drop-off between product page and purchase
- add_to_cart from every button type
- remove_from_cart and view_cart events
- Shipping and payment step events
- GA4 funnel exploration setup

A Funnel With Missing Steps Tells You Little
Most stores track the purchase and a basic add to cart. The steps between them, and the carts added from quick-view or collection pages, often go unrecorded.
Add to Cart Only on One Button
Quick add buttons, cart drawers, upsell widgets and sticky bars each add to cart differently, and many are never tracked.
No Checkout Step Detail
Without shipping and payment step events, a drop between begin_checkout and purchase looks like one unexplained gap.
Weak Audience Signals
Cart abandoner and checkout abandoner audiences in Google Ads and Meta are only as good as the events that define them.
What We Track Between Product and Purchase
We cover every place a shopper can change their cart and every step of checkout, sending the same item details at each step so the funnel can be read product by product.
Universal Add to Cart
add_to_cart from product pages, quick add, cart drawers, upsells and bundles, with the selected variant and quantity.
Cart Change Events
remove_from_cart and quantity changes, plus view_cart when the cart page or drawer opens.
Checkout Step Events
begin_checkout, add_shipping_info with shipping_tier and add_payment_info with payment_type.
Meta Funnel Events
AddToCart, InitiateCheckout and AddPaymentInfo with value and content_ids for audiences and optimization.
Google Ads Micro Conversions
Add to cart and checkout actions set as secondary conversions for insight without affecting bidding.
GA4 Funnel Reports

Add to Cart / Checkout Tracking FAQ
Straight answers before you book. Still have a question? Talk to us directly.
Should add to cart be a conversion in Google Ads?
Usually as a secondary conversion only. Bidding on add to cart can push campaigns toward cheap cart clicks instead of orders. We keep purchases as the primary goal and use cart events for insight and audiences.
Can you track Shop Pay, Apple Pay and other express buttons?
Express buttons often skip the standard checkout steps. We track the click where the platform allows it and make sure the resulting purchase is still captured, so the funnel does not show false drop-off.
Why track remove_from_cart?
Removals show which products shoppers reconsider, and they keep cart value accurate in reports. They are also useful for excluding people who emptied their cart from abandonment audiences.
Does this work with cart drawers and AJAX carts?
Yes. Drawers and AJAX carts do not reload the page, so we listen for the cart update itself or the platform's cart events rather than page views. Every add path is tested.
How long until funnel reports are useful?
Events appear in GA4 DebugView immediately and in standard reports within about a day. Funnel explorations become meaningful once enough shoppers have gone through the new steps, which depends on your traffic.
