Where GA4 Ecommerce Data Usually Breaks
Store plugins and quick installs often send a purchase event and little else, leaving funnel and product reports empty or unreliable.
Duplicate Purchases
Refreshing or revisiting the order confirmation page fires the purchase event again, inflating revenue and transactions.
Empty Product Reports
Missing or malformed items arrays mean GA4 cannot report item names, categories or item revenue, even when purchases are recorded.
Broken Checkout Funnel
When begin_checkout, add_shipping_info or add_payment_info are missing, you cannot see where shoppers abandon the checkout.
The Ecommerce Events and Data We Implement
We follow Google's recommended ecommerce schema so GA4 recognizes every event and populates its built-in monetization reports correctly.
Ecommerce dataLayer
Structured dataLayer pushes from your store with items, value, currency and transaction details on each step.
Product Discovery Events
view_item_list, select_item and view_item with list names so you can see which collections drive interest.
Cart Events
add_to_cart, remove_from_cart and view_cart with quantities and prices taken from the cart state.
Checkout Steps
begin_checkout, add_shipping_info and add_payment_info with shipping tier and payment type parameters.
Purchase and Refund
purchase with a unique transaction_id, tax, shipping and coupon, plus refund events for returned orders.
Deduplication Safeguards
Logic that prevents the purchase event from firing twice for the same order across refreshes or revisits.
How Store Data Reaches GA4 Monetization Reports
Your store platform is the source of truth. The dataLayer carries that data to GTM, which sends it to GA4 in the format Google expects.

GA4 Ecommerce Tracking FAQ
Straight answers before you book. Still have a question? Talk to us directly.
Why does GA4 revenue not match Shopify or WooCommerce?
Some difference is normal. Ad blockers, declined consent, orders placed by phone or in the admin, and payment methods that skip the confirmation page are not seen by GA4. We identify which causes apply to your store and reduce the ones that are fixable.
Do you need a developer to build the dataLayer?
It depends on the platform. On Shopify and WooCommerce we can often implement the dataLayer ourselves or through a trusted plugin. On custom builds we provide a clear specification and work with your developers to test each push.
Can you track refunds in GA4?
Yes. Refunds can be sent to GA4 with the refund event, either fully or for specific items. For refunds processed in your store admin, this usually requires a server-side call or the Measurement Protocol, which we can set up.
Does this also send purchases to Google Ads and Meta?
The same dataLayer can feed Google Ads and Meta purchase tags, which keeps values consistent across platforms. Ad platform conversion setup is scoped separately, but building on one dataLayer avoids duplicate work.
Will this work with Shopify checkout extensibility?
Yes. Shopify now restricts scripts on checkout pages, so checkout and purchase events are collected through customer events and the Web Pixels API. We implement GA4 within those constraints and explain any limitations up front.
