PHONE CLICK TRACKING

Phone Click Tracking for Calls From Your Website

When prospects tap your phone number instead of filling a form, that intent should not disappear. We track tel: link clicks across headers, footers, sticky buttons and landing pages, label where each tap came from, and send it to GA4, Google Ads and Meta.

THE PROBLEM

Why Phone Leads Go Missing From Reports

Mobile visitors tap to call and leave the page. Without a dedicated click event, your analytics show a bounce and your ad platforms see no conversion at all.

Calls Invisible to Analytics

A tap on a tel: link opens the dialer and ends the session, so GA4 records nothing unless an event is set up for that click.

Numbers Hidden in Many Places

Headers, footers, sticky mobile bars and page content each use different markup, so a single trigger often misses some of them.

Taps Confused With Real Calls

A click is intent, not a connected call. Treating the two as the same conversion misleads bidding when many taps never dial.

WHAT WE IMPLEMENT

What We Implement for Phone Click Tracking

We capture every tap on a phone link with enough context to know where it happened, then decide with you how much weight that tap should carry in each ad platform.

01

tel: Link Click Trigger

A GTM trigger on all links whose URL starts with tel:, including dynamically inserted numbers.

02

Click Context Variables

Variables for the page path, the clicked number and the placement, such as header, footer or sticky bar.

03

GA4 phone_click Event

A dedicated event with location and number parameters, optionally marked as a key event.

04

Google Ads Phone Conversion

A website click-to-call conversion action, usually set as secondary so it informs rather than drives bidding.

05

Meta Contact Event

The Meta Pixel Contact standard event fired on phone taps for audience building and reporting.

06

Call Tracking Handoff

Alignment with Google forwarding numbers or call tracking tools when you also need connected call data.

HOW IT WORKS

FAQ

Phone Click Tracking FAQ

Straight answers before you book. Still have a question? Talk to us directly.

Is a phone click the same as a phone call?

No. A click means the visitor tapped your number, but they may not have completed the call. We track taps as an intent signal and, if you need connected calls with duration, pair it with call tracking or Google forwarding numbers.

It depends on your business. For many advertisers we set them as secondary so Smart Bidding optimizes on stronger actions. If most of your revenue comes from calls and you have no call tracking, a primary phone click conversion can be a reasonable interim choice.

Plain text numbers cannot be tracked as clicks. We will point out each one and recommend turning it into a tel: link, which also makes it easier for mobile visitors to call.

Yes. When a call tracking script swaps the number, the tel: link still exists after the swap. Our trigger reads the link at the moment of the click, so it records the number the visitor actually saw.

Yes. Desktop taps on tel: links usually open a calling app or do nothing, so we keep device category in reports and you can judge desktop and mobile taps separately.
